An NDP MLA is enthused about the fact northern residents in need of treatment for drug addiction could soon be serviced by a mobile treatment unit.

Graham Addley is the politician who recommended many of the ideas in the government’s new strategy on how to deal with dependency issues.

He says details haven’t entirely been nailed down yet, but he says the idea first pitched to him at a meeting in La Ronge could see northern youth treated near their home communities.

Addley says a drug treatment team could conceivably do that for multiple locations in the North, moving from region to region.

Addley says that would enable the initiative to work both as a prevention campaign and a treatment measure.

The government also says it plans to hire four additional addictions counsellors for the North, as well.
