The minister of First Nations and Metis Relations says efforts to stage another Metis election in the province are not dead.

Maynard Sonntag says although the federal government has pulled its support for the idea, an independent oversight committee assigned to broker a new vote still has provincial funding to work with.

In addition to that, he says talks are ongoing with the Metis National Council, which is interested in helping stage another election.

Sonntag says his office is still working out how funds for Metis projects would be distributed if plans for another election fall through.

But he’s hopeful some sort of agreement can be worked out — even though he admits the process is definitely in the 11th hour.
