Mineral Exploration Field Making Room For Locals

The head of exploration for Cameco says the search for mineral deposits has come a long way in the last few decades.

This is Saskatchewan Mining Week, and Charles Roy and other mining officials are using the occasion to reflect on the progress that’s been made over the last century.

Roy says not too long ago, exploration was almost exclusively handled by prospectors and geologists — very few of whom hailed from northern communities.

However, Roy says that has changed and there is now an ever-growing push to get young northerners interested in geological science.

Roy says mineral exploration has been transformed through technology, which is not only more effective, but also less disruptive to the environment.
