The provincial government has taken the wraps off a $100-million plan to revitalize neighbourhoods in northern Saskatchewan and in inner cities.

The initiative includes $60 million to provide affordable housing for families in northern communities and the inner cities of Saskatoon, Prince Albert, North Battleford and Regina.

Roughly $49.5 million of that total will be set aside for appoximately 500 affordable rental and home ownership units for low to moderate income families and youth at risk.

Another $10 million will be used for ongoing rent subsidies for 300 very low income families and youth at risk.

In addition, $500,000 will be provided to support a training project aimed at increasing the number of inner city and northern youth involved in housing construction and repair projects.

In addition to the housing money, $40 million will be used to support inner city initiatives in Saskatoon and Regina targeted at education and skills training and the development of healthy neighbourhoods.

Premier Lorne Calvert says his government can afford to make significant investments where it knows the need is great, due mainly to the province’s increased revenues and strong economy.
