The Metis National Council’s minister of health says it’s a proud day for Metis people in Canada.

David Chartrand attended a press conference this morning in Ottawa, where the federal government pledged $10 million for Metis health training initiatives.

Under the terms of the deal, the money will be used to increase the number of Metis doctors and nurses in the country.

Chartrand says arrangements have been made to make sure the funds get to Metis training centres in Saskatchewan, including the Gabriel Dumont Institute.

Chartrand points out the good news doesn’t stop there, either.

The federal government has also pledged another $5 million over three years to help address health-related plights in Metis communities.

He expects much of that money to go towards the fight against diabetes.
