METSI Students Worry About Living Expenses

About 700 Metis post-secondary students are trying to cope with the sudden withdrawal of their funding.

The federal government has decided not to renew its funding agreement with METSI, but it hasn’t said why.

The deal expired at the end of April, forcing METSI to recently issue layoff notices to staff.

Student Brenda Cummings says she still has three weeks to go to finish her first year of management studies at the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology.

Cummings says she relied on the funding to pay for living expenses, and now, the bills are starting to pile up.

Cummings also says she’s heard reports the government might be willing to help students in her situation finish the rest of the school year, but so far, nothing has materialized.
