A new program has been launched in Saskatoon intended to provide Aboriginal sensitivity training to government and industry.

Entitled “Our Story: Dispelling Misconceptions”, the initiative is the brainchild of Metis Employment and Training of Saskatchewan Incorporated.

CEO Constance Hourie says employers who request the training will receive visits from her staff, who will then teach them about Aboriginal customs and traditions.

Hourie says many businesses in the province still suffer from a lack of understanding when it comes to hiring Aboriginal workers.

She says common stereotypes that her group is trying to eradicate include the misconceptions that Aboriginal employees are always late or are not prepared to work.

Hourie says her people are willing to travel, and already have some clients lined up.

The program is sponsored by both the province and Ottawa.

It gets fully underway in January.
