Metis Man Secures Settlement Over Weapons Range

A Metis man from northern Saskatchewan has apparently settled a long-standing claim against the federal government.

Ambrose Maurice launched a lawsuit against the government about a decade ago after running into some legal obstacles concerning another matter.

Maurice had wanted Ottawa to address his family’s forced removal from what’s now the Primrose Lake Air Weapons Range through the government’s specific claims process.

However, he was informed that process only applied to status Indians — not Metis.

Maurice sued the government over this, and earlier this year, he and the feds reached an out-of-court settlement.

A confidentiality agreement prevents details of the settlement from being released.
