A Metis land base and harvesting rights are some of the main topics of discussion today at a gathering near Turnor Lake.

The North West Saskatchewan Metis Council is hosting an information session as part of its annual cultural festivities at Palmbere Lake this weekend.

Officials with the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan have repeatedly said a large Metis land claim in northwest Saskatchewan will go to trial within the next year of two.

Researchers at the University of Alberta have been digging up evidence to back that claim. They are delivering an update at today’s meeting.

Those in attendance are also hearing a presentation on Metis harvesting rights, which recently received a boost in this province thanks to two favourable court rulings.

As well, participants are getting a history lesson regarding the Metis families in northwest Saskatchewan.
