The president of the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan is applauding yesterday’s court ruling in Manitoba affirming Metis harvesting rights there.

Robert Doucette says the decision reaffirms the view that the Metis are mobile people whose traditional land encompasses all of the Prairie provinces.

Doucette says provincial governments must realize that Metis rights can’t be pidgeon-holed into separate communities.

He adds the decision is something the Saskatchewan government should take note of.

According to Doucette, the MNS plans to begin formal negotiations on a Saskatchewan-wide Metis harvesting agreement with the provincial government soon.
