The Paul Martin Liberals are promising to work with Metis leaders and other levels of government on the place of the Metis in federal government policies.

Ottawa’s pledge in yesterday’s speech from the throne represents the first time the Metis have been specifically mentioned in a throne speech since 1982.

And, Martin said today that he will not allow his government to be caught up in the jurisdictional wrangling concerning Metis affairs.

Metis National Council president Clem Chartier welcomes the news and says it sends a strong signal to federal bureaucrats that they need to begin opening their doors to Metis leaders.
