A Metis activist from Beauval feels a general meeting for Metis citizens in Saskatchewan could take place this spring without the blessing of the MNS.

Alex Maurice, who made an unsuccessful bid for MNS president in 2004, says he was one of about 35 Metis who spoke to provincial and federal officials at a meeting ten days ago.

He says most people agree that an independent body needs to be put in place to make sure a fair vote is held the next time the MNS holds and election.

Maurice says, based on preliminary discussions, an AGM on the issue could take place as early as May 5th, with a Metis local presidents’ meeting to follow.

Maurice hopes disputed MNS president Dwayne Roth and the rest of the organization’s executive can be persuaded to join the process.

But if they don’t, he says the grassroots movement will forge ahead on its own.
