Method Of Processing CEP Claims Questioned

A Regina-based lawyer says he worries more delays await residential school survivors expecting compensation money from the government.

Tony Merchant says he has heard word that Ottawa is setting aside many application forms for a higher level of scrutiny.

Last week, a spokeswoman for Service Canada said her department was having trouble getting cheques out, due to the high volume of Common Experience Payment applications that had been received.

But Merchant says he believes the real reason is tied to the fact many application forms are being pulled from the automatic processing category.

Merchant maintains the move stems from the government’s CEP forms, which her argues were unnecessarily complicated and hard to fill out.

He worries more than half of the common experience applications may be moved to the category requiring further scrutiny.
