The Fond du Lac First Nation has a new chief after finally getting its chief election out of the way.

After four ballots, challenger Albert Mercredi defeated incumbent leader Victor Fern to secure the position.

The final totals saw Mercredi getting 132 votes to Fern’s 118.

Three ballots were spoiled.

Fern defeated Mercredi on the third ballot, and was initially declared the winner, before election officials realized he hadn’t captured a majority of the votes cast — including spoiled ballots.

Chief electoral officer Bertha Mercredi says Albert Mercredi was declared the winner Wednesday night.

She says the appeal board is in place should Fern launch an appeal.

Albert Mercedi’s term is for two years.
