Merchant Up In Arms Over Compensation Delays

Regina lawyer Tony Merchant says Ottawa is once again stalling compensation for residential school victims.

Merchant is upset that the federal government is telling survivors that application forms for compensation that are making the rounds are drafts only — and that applications won’t be accepted until September 19th.

Merchant says he has an e-mail from Ottawa that indicates the forms are not drafts.

He also doesn’t understand why the government still isn’t ready to accept applications for the common experience payments, noting the deal was agreed to in November 2005.

Merchant says, at this rate, survivors might not get their compensation by Christmas — let alone late September.
