A lawyer who represents several thousand residential school survivors says he thinks it’s safe for them to relax.

Tony Merchant says the Court of Appeal’s decision to lift a stay of proceedings that had been imposed is positive, and should result in cheques being mailed out this fall.

Merchant says the next order of business is to get through the waiting period for survivors during which time they can opt out.

He doesn’t expect many of them to do that and hasn’t come across any organized efforts to do so.
