The Liberal candidate in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River says an overhaul needs to be done on the health care system and how it functions in the North.

Gary Merasty is making the comments on the heels of concerns expressed recently by Ile-a-la-Crosse mayor Max Morin regarding the current status of northern health care and its effect on the working poor.

Merasty notes there are a number of underlying issues and deficiencies in the North which he says need to be immediately addressed and changed, including transportation challenges, low income levels and the lack of availability and high cost of prescription medications.

Merasty says there is also a need to re-visit how taxis and ambulances are paid to get patients to southern centres.

He adds additional medical equipment needs to be established in the North to reduce the need to send northerners south for medical care.
