Merasty Defends Record On Boarding School Issue

The Liberal MP in northern Saskatchewan says if his main rival can help get compensation for the boarding school survivors in Ile-a-la-Crosse, he should.

Gary Merasty is responding to Tory candidate Jeremy Harrison’s assertion that Merasty has done little on the file in Ottawa during his time in Parliament.

Merasty insists he has had many discussions with government officials, and asked Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice about it during a committee meeting in November.

He also points out he specifically questioned the Tories about their election promise on the issue during a speech in the House of Commons last May.

However, Merasty says the important thing is the former students get compensated — and he is urging Harrison to do everything he can to make that happen.

As for Harrison’s contention that Merasty has been “invisible” in his riding, Merasty says the people will make that call during the next election.
