Merasty Claims Liberal Nomination Unopposed

To no one’s surprise, Gary Merasty is now officially the Liberal candidate in the federal riding of Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River.

Merasty won the nomination unopposed Friday night in La Ronge.

The former chief of the Prince Albert Grand Council is running against incumbent Conservative MP Jeremy Harrison and the NDP’s Anita Jackson in the northern Saskatchewan riding.

Merasty’s nomination officially sets up what is promising to be one of the most intriguing battles in the current election campaign, with both the Liberals and the NDP trying to win back a seat that has been held by the Conservatives.

Many credit a split of the so-called “Aboriginal vote” for Harrison’s election victory last year, and some feel that scenario could unfold again in next month’s election.
