The mayor of Meadow Lake is fairly optimistic about a new road that will link La Loche to Fort McMurray.

After last week’s announcement of the construction of the long-awaited road link, there was renewed speculation about the possible negative effects on the Meadow Lake economy — since many northerners will likely begin to travel to Fort McMurray for supplies instead of Meadow Lake.

Mayor Darwin Obrigewitsch says he feels the long-term impact on the local economy will be positive.

He notes the road will open up traffic in both directions, and is anticipating his community will benefit from Alberta tourists.

Construction of the La Loche-Fort McMurray road link is projected to be complete within three years.
