Meadow Lake Becomes Saskatchewan’s Newest City

Meadow Lake officially became Saskatchewan’s 14th city today.

Premier Brad Wall and Meadow Lake Mayor Darwin Obrigewitsch made that announcement this morning.

In Saskatchewan, a community must have a population of at least 5,000 people in order to officially become a city.

In the last census, Meadow Lake’s population fell just short of 5,000, but officials are confident it reached that level over the past three years.

Meadow Lake’s city status will take effect on Nov. 9, following the first council meeting after this fall’s civic elections.

Humboldt was the last Saskatchewan town to be declared a city.

It achieved the status in 2000.
