MBC CEO Wins First Nations Award

Five northerners were among the 13 winners of First Nations Awards handed out in Regina last night.

 

Missinipi Broadcasting Corporation CEO Deborah Charles, Montreal Lake Chief Lionel Bird and Judge Gerald Morin were all honoured last night.

 

Charles, a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, received the journalism award. Bird was given the business award. Morin, a member of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, was recognized in the justice category.

 

Other winners from the North include Montreal Lake’s Norman Henderson, who took home the veterans award, and English River band member Doris Gunn, who was honoured in the sports and recreation category.

 

Little Black Bear’s Daniel James Bellegarde won the lifetime achievement award.

 

Three members of the Peepeekisis First Nation took home some hardware. Ann Callahan won in the health category, Mike Pinay was given the community work award and Jody Bellegarde was honoured in the science and technology category.

 

Other winners include Sakimay’s Don Pinay for his work in education, Phyllis Longman of the George Gordon reserve for social work, the Starblanket Juniors in the arts and entertainment category and Little Pine’s Heather Abbey, who won the youth award and a $3,000 bursary.

 

The organization Women of the Dawn has hosted the annual First Nations Awards ceremony for the last 13 years.
