The mayor of La Loche says she hasn’t had it confirmed by Canada Post, but has heard secondhand that there will be some cutbacks at the post office in her community.

Georgina Jolibois says two staff members are apparently getting their hours cut.

“Currently, what we have been dealing with, with Canada Post, is that during certain hours during the day, the post office will be closed when the mail arrives to be sorted out. I believe that may happen. The number of hours that (the office) may not be open to the public is a concern,” Jolibois says.

The mayor says La Loche is the hub of the Dene people in Saskatchewan, and the second largest community in the north, so she is concerned about the impact the cuts may have on residents.

She plans on inviting Canada Post reps to La Loche for a consultation, and also plans on speaking to the north’s Member of Parliament, Rob Clarke.
