A Beauval man who ran for president in last spring’s Metis Nation of Saskatchewan election says still believes a new vote is the only way of solving the current dispute.

That being said, Alex Maurice is encouraged by recent conciliation meetings he has had with a government-appointed arbitrator.

The talks are being held to see if Maurice, Dwayne Roth and Robert Doucette can agree on how to resolve the controversy generated over last spring’s MNS election.

Maurice says he believes most Metis want to see a new election take place, but he’s convinced it shouldn’t go ahead unless it’s run by an independent body.

However, Maurice cautions that the entire situation could change if any legal action is taken against anyone connected with last spring’s vote.

He says that scenario could conceivably alter the options open to the Metis people regarding how to resolve this dispute between the MNS executive and the dissidents.

Meanwhile, Maurice maintains he is not bothered by the federal government’s silence over the election issue.

He feels the affair is mainly the jurisdiction of the provincial government.

However, Maurice says he wouldn’t be suprised to learn the feds were somehow involved in the process behind the scenes.
