Following months of research into the effects of the 1999 Mallard fire in the La Ronge area, a group from the University of Lethbridge has released its findings and made some recommendations.

Lead researcher Judith Kulig says that further disaster planning may be necessary between the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, the Town of La Ronge and the Village of Air Ronge in case another evacuation ever becomes necessary.

Kulig says that while the three jurisdictions worked together admirably during and following the fire — a variety of evacuation plans may have to be drawn up to suit residents from every income bracket.

She adds that some time over the next six months, someone from her team will conduct random interviews with residents to find out how to best distribute the information from the group’s research.

Kulig is presenting her findings over four separate public meetings this week.
