Majority Oppose Sask. Uranium Development: Report

Saskatchewan people are opposed to uranium development in the province.

That’s according to a report released by the provincial government today.

The report indicates that 84 per cent of those consulted oppose uranium development.

The results are based of the opinions of more than 2,000 people from public consultations held across the province earlier this year.

Some of the key concerns expressed by people who attended the meetings were health, safety and the environment.

Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd says the government will be taking “great caution” in deciding whether or not to move forward with uranium development in the province.

“When I look at this report, it’s neither a green light nor a red light for the future of uranium development. It’s more like a yellow light — ‘take any next steps with great caution.’ Saskatchewan people are saying, ‘Take your time, get it right, consider all the options,’ and I think that’s very wise counsel,” Boyd says.

NDP critic Sandra Morin says the report is a clear rejection of nuclear energy for the province.

She says a more comprehensive approach is needed for people to decide about uranium development.
