Municipal elections are taking place all over the province today, and Northern Saskatchewan is no exception.

A total of 12 northern municipalities have voting taking place today, including most of the North’s larger communities.

Elections have been conducted in other northern communities over the last month or so, and have already seen a couple of long-time mayors voted out of office in La Loche and Green Lake.

The most hotly-contested battles for mayor today are likely in Buffalo Narrows and Sandy Bay. Six people are running for mayor in Buffalo Narrows — 5 are running in Sandy Bay’s election.

Ile-a-la-Crosse, Beauval and Stony Rapids are some of the other northern communities that feature elections for mayor.

In communities like La Ronge, Air Ronge and Creighton, where the mayors are in by acclamation, voting for council is taking centre stage today.

School divisions in the North are also holding elections today. Twenty-four candidates are running for 9 seats on the Northern Lights School Division board. Board elections for the Ile-a-la-Crosse and Creighton school divisions are also taking place today.
