Lonechild Wants Less Politicians On FNUC Board

A candidate for chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says he would like to downsize the board of the First Nations University of Canada.

Guy Lonechild is running to replace Lawrence Joseph as head of the FSIN in an election this fall.

Lonechild says education is a major plank in his platform, and nowhere is the issue more crucial than at the FNUC.

The school is currently under censure by the Canadian Association of University Teachers.

The association feels the university hasn’t done enough to free itself from political influence when it comes to the decision-making process.

Lonechild says he wants to implement recommendations laid out in an all-chiefs task force report compiled in November 2005.

He says he would also like to hold an open forum where chiefs and educators could swap ideas on the best way forward.
