The Lac La Ronge Indian Band has announced it has taken custody of the newborn allegedly abandoned by his mother in the washroom stall at the Prince Albert Wal-Mart store.
Chief Tammy Cook-Season confirms the band is now caring for the child, and adds he is being offered everything necessary to ensure his safety and well-being.
Cook-Searson says she can’t give detailed comments about the issue, because it is now a matter for Child Protective Services.
She says the infant is doing well and in good condition.
The Prince Albert Police say the child was released from hospital in Saskatoon earlier this week.
Yesterday, Cook-Searson confirmed the mother was a band member.
As for the funds that have been raised for the baby’s care, Cook-Searson says the band plans to place the money in a trust fund for the boy until he turns 18. She adds family members will not be able to access the money.
