The chief of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band says she is learning a lot about land use planning from a northern Ontario First Nation.

Tammy Cook-Searson is part of a delegation from La Ronge that’s visiting the Pikanjikum reserve.

Cook-Searson notes that while the community is one of the few reserves in the country still without water and sewer services, it has really taken ownership of its land use plan.

She’s especially impressed with how that community’s elders have taken the lead on that issue — a level of interest she hopes to see in her band.

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band is one of several groups that have been developing the La Ronge Land Use Plan — a document that is still being drafted.
