The Liberals have asked northern Saskatchewan’s Member of Parliament to help them maximize their Aboriginal support in the next election.
Gary Merasty has been appointed the Special Advisor for Aboriginal Outreach on the Liberals’ national election readiness committee.
Merasty says his duties will include identifying ridings where the Aboriginal vote can make a difference, and encouraging Native people in those constituencies to participate in the election.
He says he will also help shape the Liberals’ Aboriginal platform and related policy.
Liberal Leader Stephane Dion says he is “extremely pleased” Merasty has accepted this position, and calls Merasty “an important leader in the Liberal caucus and in the Aboriginal community”.
Merasty says Dion has been very receptive and open to his ideas.
Merasty will begin his duties immediately.
