Liberal Riding Association Dispute Continues

A former Metis leader from northwest Saskatchewan says he doesn’t see the need to elect a new Liberal riding executive for the Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River constituency.

Jimmy Durocher says party members elected Chief Marcel Head of the Shoal Lake Cree Nation to head up the group last year.

His position is countered by the president of the Saskatchewan Liberal Association, who says Cheryl Maurice is the real president.

Frank Proto says a new leader can only be chosen at an annual general meeting that’s sanctioned by himself.

Proto also says an AGM must take place before the nomination process begins.

Durocher contends Maurice wasn’t actually elected, but appointed by the Liberals’ green light committee.

Durocher says northerners will simply elect Head again at the upcoming meeting, but he doesn’t see the logic in having to do it twice.

He also says he’s ready to accept Joan Beatty as the official candidate if she wins a nomination process.
