An lawyer living in Toronto has returned home to the Canoe Lake Cree Nation for a special night.
Delia Opikokew is being recognized by her community for her work in the courtroom.
The band is also calling attention to the Aboriginal Achievement Award that Opikokew was presented with back in March.
Opikokew say she can’t wait to see everyone.
“I feel very honoured. I think one of the best places to be honoured is in your own home community, and I feel very humbled about it,” she says.
Opikokew’s past credits include work on the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the Leo Lachance/Carney Nerland Inquiry.
She’s currently working on a number of files, including a land claim in the Maritimes, and the residential school process.
