Guy Lariviere is still the chief of the Canoe Lake Cree Nation.

The long-time chief defeated four challengers in a band election held yesterday.

Lariviere received 237 votes. His stiffest competition came from Bernice Iron, who finished with 173 votes.

Elected to band council are Leonard Opekokew, Joe Durocher, Clarence “Sonny” Iron, Florence Yew, Francois Iron and Rhonda Opekokew.

All of the winners will serve a two-year term in office.

Another northern band, the Waterhen Lake First Nation, holds its election on Monday.
