A former northern MP has filed nomination papers to run for mayor in Beauval.

Rick Laliberte is one of two candidates in the running to succeed incumbent mayor Sandy Rediron.

Alex Maurice is also trying to become Beauval’s next mayor. He unsuccessfully ran for president in the controversial 2004 Metis Nation of Saskatchewan election.

Rediron is choosing not to seek re-election as mayor, but is one of several candidates making a bid for a seat on village council.

Laliberte is hoping to kickstart a political career that took a downturn in the 2004 federal election.

Laliberte was unseated as MP in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River by Jeremy Harrison after a 7-year stint in Ottawa.

Laliberte finished fourth in that vote amidst questions about his travel expenses.

Meanwhile, in Cumberland House, long-time mayor Dale McAuley will has one challenger in his re-election bid.

Former village water plant operator Andy McKay is hoping to prevent McAuley from winning a fourth term in office.

The elections in Beauval and Cumberland House will take place on October 4th.
