A prominent First Nations leader has been chosen as a recepient of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit — the province’s highest honour.

Former Saskatoon tribal chief Lester Lafond was selected for the honour due to his long record of service within the First Nations community.

Lafond is a member of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation.

He says most of his work over the years has been in the field of business.

He admits to being surprised by the honour, and adds he can’t help but think about all the people that helped him along the way.

Some of Lafond’s other accomplishments include being named Indian Entrepeneur of the Year in 1989, and being listed as one of the ten most influential people in Saskatchewan.
