A well-known business leader in Saskatchewan has been appointed to the First Nations Tax Commission.
Lester Lafond of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation is one of seven people assigned by Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice to serve as commissioners of the body.
The mandate of the commission is to support and regulate on-reserve property tax regimes across Canada.
Lafond says his own band collects property tax and it is an essential tool in planning for the future.
Lafond adds some band leaders used to get nervous when they heard the word “tax” mentioned, but he feels that is changing.
He says in addition to establishing a steady stream of income, property tax also helps set the stage for commercial development.
