Renewed calls for people to use extra caution while on ice surfaces have come following the death of a woman on Bigstone Lake over the weekend.

RCMP Cpl. Brian Jones says a 35-year-old woman from the La Ronge area died after of the snowmobile she was operating plunged into open water.

Jones says the woman was last seen on Saturday night and reported missing the following morning.

He says upon police investigation, footprints from where the machine entered the open water indicated that the woman managed to get out of the water and walk a distance along the shore, before succumbing to the elements. She was located by searchers Sunday afternoon.

Jones says an autopsy is underway and foul play is not believed to be a factor at this time.
