New “state-of-the-art” ultrasound equipment at the La Ronge Health Centre should be in place and fully operational by this December, thanks to money raised through a locally-organized radiothon.
The La Ronge Elks’ Club presented a cheque for the full $200,000 to Joe Hordyski, chair of the Mamawetan Churchill River health region board, last night at a thank you supper for the Elks, staff from MBC and Rawlco Radio, and volunteers from the health region.
The health region’s X-ray and ultrasound supervisor, Dorla Watt, says it was “phenomenal” to see how people got behind the fundraising initiative.
“I don’t think we were really anticipating the results that we got, and it’s just great being a front line worker and actually using the equipment and seeing how it’s definitely going to benefit everybody in our community. It’s just fantastic. So it’s really great that they took the initiative — you know, our local people helping local people,” Watt says.
The day-long June event, which was broadcast live on MBC from the La Ronge curling lounge, included a pancake breakfast and a hamburger lunch served by volunteers, as well as an evening cabaret.
