La Ronge Judge Wins Pension Battle

A La Ronge judge will soon receive a government pension, despite the fact he is still serving on the bench.

The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal has ruled that Judge Wilfrid Tucker can collect money owed to him for work he did as a Crown prosecutor prior to 1994.

The ruling overturns an earlier decision that prevented him from receiving the money.

The government initially viewed Tucker as a provincial employee — meaning he couldn’t collect a government pension while still on the job.

However, his lawyer, John Beckman, says that decision was a mistake because a judge is not a government employee.

Beckman says he doesn’t think the decision will have any bearing on other pension cases involving civil servants — it’s only applicable to judges.
