A 13-year-old girl will have to wait another day to find out her fate in a case that saw a La Ronge woman end up with third-degree burns to over half of her body.

26-year-old Tracey Bird was set on fire by the then-12-year-old suspect just over a year ago.

This morning, the judge presiding over the case turned down an application by the Crown for a psychiatric assessment of the girl and adjourned his decision of the appropriate sentence until tomorrow morning.

Court heard the youth tried committing suicide on one occasion, and has inflicted self-harm upon herself in the months leading up to her trial and sentencing.

Court was also told the youth consumed alcohol once and smoked marijuana on several occasions up until February of 2007 while on an undertaking.

The Crown asked the judge to consider a maximum sentence of 16 months in closed custody, followed by eight months of community supervision.

The defence asked the judge to consider a maximum sentence of two years’ probation because the youth never had a prior criminal record and displayed “relatively good behavior” while on her undertaking.
