La Ronge Band Members Choosing New Chief

Today is the day members of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band decide who they want to replace their long-time chief.

The band is holding its chief and council election in its six reserve communities today, and the big question is who will replace Harry Cook — who’s leaving politics after serving as chief for the last 18 years.

There are eight people running for chief — six from La Ronge and two from Stanley Mission.

The candidates include four councillors from the previous band council — Tammy Cook-Searson, Gordon Hardlotte, Irwin Hennie and Henry McKenzie.

The other candidates are former chief Tom McKenzie, Russel Charles, Keith Olsen and Kelvin Lindskog.

The winner will serve a 3-year term in office.

Meanwhile, a total of 61 candidates are running for a spot on the band’s council.

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band is the province’s largest First Nation.
