La Loche Metis Feeling Left Out Of Oilsands Deal

A Metis leader in northwest Saskatchewan says he’s disappointed his group wasn’t part of a recent signing of an economic agreement in La Loche.

The village recently completed a deal with Oilsands Quest that will provide funds to the community for things like roads, playgrounds and a youth centre.

Metis Local 39 leader Don Montgrand says he’s fine with that — he just wishes the Metis had been represented in talks between the company and the village.

He says his local includes over 3,000 members and he wants to make sure they’re fully represented in agreements like this.

Montgrand, who is also president of the N-19 fur block, says the trappers also should have been included in the signing.
