Questions over the future of commercial fishing were front and centre at a government open house this week in La Loche.

Tanya Johnston of Saskatchewan Environment says about 60 people turned out to Monday’s information session.

She says many of the participants wanted to know why the area does not have a summer fishery, and openly wondered if that might be a better option compared to the winter fishery currently in place.

The next public consultation meeting on fishing is taking place today in Buffalo Narrows.

The provincial government is using the meetings to help develop a new fisheries management plan by 2008.

Saskatchewan Environment intends to rely heavily on the input of sport fishers, commercial fishers and outfitters in drafting the plan.
