An internationally trained consultant is in Ile-a-la-Crosse today and Friday.

The purpose of the meeting is to set up a strategic plan for community health development in the Keewatin Yatthe Health Region.

Elaine Malboeuf, the region’s executive director of community health development, says the meeting is needed because Keewatin Yatthe is a huge region.

So, staff have to carefully plan the most efficient way of delivering health care.

“Basically what we’re wanting to do at this point is bring our staff together, our regional staff, to try to better coordinate their efforts and make sure that we align everybody strategically, so we’re moving forward in a concentrated manner,” Malboeuf says.

Malboeuf says a recent forum on suicide prevention in La Loche underlined the need for help in the region.

The meeting was held Sept. 10, and it was very emotional.

“One of the highlights of the forum was (the presentation by) a young individual who had lost eight of her close friends to suicide, and she herself had attempted suicide, and she came to share her story,” Malboeuf recalls.

She says the forum attracted about 600 registrants.

It was so popular, more than 200 people had to be turned away.
