Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer has announced that the Wi Ci Ti Zon Group Home at Keeseekoose is reopening and will be accepting children by the end of the month.

According to the province, representatives of the Keeseekoose First Nation and the Group Home “have worked diligently to address the areas of concern”.

Specific actions were requested to address ongoing care and treatment of children at Keeseekoose when the facility was shut down earlier this year.

The government says requests for staff training, increased supervision of the children and a monitoring role for the Ministry of Social Services have been addressed.

According to the province, the group home developed operating procedures that meet provincial standards and have provided them in writing.

Keeseekoose has also established a policy to guarantee the rights of children by allowing the Children’s Advocate access to children at the group home.

Band officials have not been immediately available for comment.
