Provincial Liberal Leader David Karwacki is sending an invoice for $1.1 billion dollars to the federal government for “their abandonment of federal responsibilities towards Status First Nations health and social services”.

Karwacki maintains the province has assumed most of the health and social service funding for status Indians, while watching Ottawa “wash its hands of its obligations”.

He says he will hold the federal government to account for “passing their fiscal responsibility to the provincial coffers”.

According to Karwacki, the Saskatchewan Liberal Party plan proposes that the province use the money it is owed to pay for First Nations health and social programs.

He says future savings could be put towards paying down the province’s debt.
