The 2009 Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence and Excellence in Early Childhood Education were announced yesterday, and a couple of teachers from a Saskatchewan reserve were among the recipients.

The Awards were announced at a ceremony in Ottawa for World Teachers’ Day.

This is the first year the awards are giving specific recognition for excellence among Aboriginal teachers working at schools on-reserve.

Tania McKay and Fran Oksasikewiyin are receiving a Certificate of Achievement for their work at the Kahkewistahaw Headstart program.

Award recipients are selected based on innovation, leadership, and community involvement.
