A trial begins today for a Saskatchewan man accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old Cree girl in 2001.

A jury of nine women and three men was chosen this morning to hear the case against Jeffrey Kindrat.

Kindrat and two other men were implicated in the incident, which allegedly occurred on a dark country road near Tisdale.

Kindrat and co-accused Jeffrey Brown were acquitted of the charge three years ago, but the Crown appealed.

A third man, Dean Edmondson, was convicted of the crime — but served no jail time. Instead, a judge sentenced him to two years of house arrest.

Another trial involving Brown will take place in the fall.
