A motion to make June National Aboriginal History Month has been passed in the House of Commons.

The motion was put forward for the second time in three years by B.C. New Democrat Jean Crowder.

After receiving opposition three years ago, the motion received a resounding thumbs up from the Commons this time around.

Crowder says Ottawa is just following Saskatchewan’s lead, as Aboriginal History Month has been recognized provincially since 2006.

She says it’s very important to recognize the history and the contributions of First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples in Canada.

Alberta had also previously recognized June as Aboriginal History Month.
